2nd Degree Black Belt Cake

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

Austen celebrated her achievement of making 2nd degree black belt with her first cake ever. We received an inquiry from Austen’s mom, Jeannine, requesting a gluten-free cake since Austen is allergic to wheat. My own mom is allergic to more foods than can be written on both sides of a 3×5″ card in small letters. We’re sympathetic to people that cannot enjoy what many of us take for granted as everyday foods. However, allergies are tricky, and we’re not nutritionists. Knowing Austen’s story and that her mom wanted a great decorated cake, we were moved to do something special for her.

Jeannine worked out a deal with us where she would buy a couple of gluten-free cakes from Whole Foods, and we would cut and assemble it into a 4-tiered cake that we could frost, drape in fondant, and decorate. Austen drew the design that showed all the belts you must achieve before getting the 2nd degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do. Shooting stars, silver ribbons, dragees, and her Tae Kwon Do figure with the 2nd degree black belt also decorate the cake.

When Austen finally saw the cake that she designed, she was speechless. Her mom and sister kept exclaiming, “It’s gorgeous.” Her dad just stared before saying, “You rock, dude.” Obviously we do this to make a living, but the real payoff is seeing a person’s reaction. And when we heard Austen say “I can’t believe that’s my cake”, we knew we did a good job. Congratulations, Austen! You designed an awesome cake and made the great achievement of 2nd degree black belt!

First Words Cake

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

The first year of a baby’s life is full of firsts. First smile, first step, first laugh. Jashunpan’s parents wanted to celebrate his first birthday with a cake that shows what he has learned in that critical year, his first words: tabla (the Indian drums), socks, airplane, brush, ball, sports car, balloons, and blueberries.

1969 Volkswagon Bug

Monday, August 18th, 2008

California is not only a destination for vacations and honeymoons, but also weddings. So when a couple comes from Rhode Island to get married, of course their 1969 Volkswagon Bug comes with them.

We received a picture of the exact car to make, including their license plate. The car was sculpted out of coconut cake with coconut buttercream into the classic VW Bug shape.

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a Rhode Island plate, but when a specific element is requested, we study it to get the details just right. Can you see the light blue wave in the license plate?

Fleming 55 Yacht

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

My dream boat is a sailboat that I can take in the bay, under the Golden Gate bridge, and out to the ocean. Robert’s dream boat is the Fleming 55 Yacht.

We brought this cake to Robert’s birthday party through the busy streets of Santana Row up to the Cielo Restaurant and Bar on the top of Hotel Valencia. It’s so much fun walking with a showstopper cake, seeing the surprise and amazement on people’s faces, and hearing the recognition that we’re carrying a cake like what they’ve seen on the Food Network’s Ace of Cakes. The comparison is an absolute honor.

Robert’s other love is the barbeque. Robert is the captain of the BBQ and the “Hungwah” yacht at his birthday party adventure cruise. Happy Birthday!

Tweedledum and Tweedledee Sweet 16

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

Our Sweet 16, Abby, requested a modified Colette Peters design. The bottom teapot says Sweet Sixteen, and all of the colors and decorations on the cake were specially requested to match Abby’s colorful personality. Topping the teapot and cups are the twins from Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking Glass, the sequel to Alice in Wonderland.

Delivering a three-tiered topsy turvy cake over the hill from downtown San Jose on winding Highway 17 to Santa Cruz is nervewracking to say the least. It was such a relief to see Tweedledum and Tweedledee still standing when we arrived at the Ideal Bar and Grill at the entrance of the wharf by the Boardwalk. Then when we set the cake down on the display table and saw the phones come out for pictures, we knew all of the care to decorate and then keep everything together was appreciated.

Happy Birthday, Abby!
