Dolce & Gabbana Miss Biz Purse Cake

Dolce & Gabbana Miss Biz Purse Cake

Our first leopard print cake was the Webkinz Leopard Print Cake. The leopard print took a lot of time to make out of fondant. It’s a great textural look for a cake with sculpted animals. For this cake we knew we needed to paint the design to make the closest exact match of the design of the Dolce & Gabbana Miss Biz purse.

Until recently I haven’t been confident in my painting skills. We all grow up playing arts and crafts, but I had given up painting at an early age, disappointed in my lack of skills. In the world of cake, there are so many skills that can be applied to make great designs, and I’ve been trying to work on my painting again.

I found the best picture that I could of the purse, mixed colors to match the purse, and went to work painting. It’s so satisfying to focus and just do it and actually see that I’m able to duplicate a design. I’m always going to be my worst critic and I know where I want just a touch more paint, but overall I was very happy with this cake.

And I loved hearing from Ruby that’s she’s looking forward to being 40 and fabulous. I can just imagine her shaking that leopard print with a confident attitude. Happy 40th Ruby!

Pinky Goes to Hollywood Cake

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

This special birthday cake was for a lady that’s always pretty in pink and making her way to the stars. We’re hoping to hear more about Pinky, with her name glittering in the Hollywood lights and walking down her own pink carpet one of these days. “Welcome to Hollywood Pinky.”

Halloween Cakes

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

Here at AJ’s Moonlight Bakery, Amy and I absolutely love Halloween. It’s the colder weather with long nights and decorated houses at the start of months of holidays that make this season great. So you know we were excited to make quite a few Halloween cakes.

For my niece, we made a tiered cake inspired by beautiful invitations. I was thrilled to walk into her Halloween-themed birthday party with a pumpkin cake dressed up for the party. I can’t imagine a better party for a 2-year-old than one with Halloween games where everyone wears costumes.

The design for Hayden’s 1st birthday cake came from a few different cakes that his mom liked. It’s always cool when we can get an idea of what a client likes and then are free to run with the ideas to create the cake.

Owen turned 5 with a Jack Skellington cake and what looked like a great Halloween birthday party. We built up the top of the cake to give the face dimension.

Our last cake went to a Halloween party where the outside of the house had a ton of decorations including glowing ghosts and tombstones. We made this Monsters Cemetery cake inspired by their decor.

Like the holiday, this cake was even better in the dark when you could see the glowing ghosts and the fire glowing under the witch’s cauldron.

We’re Back!

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

Hello again! After a hiatus of many months, the blog is finally back! Yahoo! announced that WordPress would force an update on all of the blogs running on very old versions of the software (like this one). This cake lady knows how to do many things on a computer, but maintaining the blog software is not my expertise. I was relieved that I didn’t need to figure out how to install the update. Whew!

So now that our technical difficulties are behind us, let’s get back to the cakes. Yeah!
