Tiffany Box Birthday Cake with Holly Golightly Letter

Tiffany Box Birthday Cake Holly Golightly Letter

I can’t believe all the rain we’ve been getting at the end of May here in sunny California. Of course I was wary of the dark clouds threatening to storm on this Tiffany box cake that was delivered to Ann’s Coffee Shop in Menlo Park. I was hoping the rainbow over the hills behind Menlo Park was a good sign because I like rainbows. But knowing they’re only created by light AND water, why was I so hopeful?

Well, I delivered to this coffee shop that looked to be from 50 years ago with the large counter in the middle of the shop taking over most of the space. A few locals appeared to be enjoying their quiet morning of big plates and newspapers. Little did they know I was bringing the cake for a small crowd to celebrate a birthday breakfast.

The Tiffany box came with a special message, “Thank you for joining me for breakfast. Happy Birthday, Linda. Love, Holly Golightly.” I have a feeling the ladies coming to celebrate Linda’s birthday were going to liven up the place and disturb the men’s peace talking about Breakfast at Tiffany’s. I mean, who doesn’t get excited when they see a Tiffany box?! Happy Birthday Linda!

If you could get a letter from a movie character, who would you choose?

Square Offset Tiered Graduation Cake Patrick

Even if I hadn’t been invited to a preschool graduation last week, I could tell by the orders we have that graduation season is here. For Patrick’s celebration, we made the cinnamon bun cake with brown sugar cinnamon cream cheese icing into a festive tiered offset square cake with a graduation cap and accents of blue.

Congratulations Patrick! The future is yours!

Sakamoto Slug Run 2010 Fundraiser Cake

There was a great turnout at the Sakamoto Elementary Slug Run fundraiser last Saturday. I was surprised at just how many kids and parents were there. With the purpose of sending all of their 6th graders to Science camp, it was a cause we were happy to be a part of. I mean, I wish I could have gone to Science camp when I was younger. What a great opportunity for the kids!

Gucci Duffel Moneybag Birthday Cake

Monday, May 17th, 2010

We’ve received a few calls for edible image cakes. I’ve seen those cakes for graduations and other accomplishments, where the picture of the person-of-the-hour is on the top of a sheet cake with a piped shell border on the sides. The images are made to adhere to the smooth buttercream in a way that you shouldn’t notice the edge of the paper image and the beginning of the buttercream. Well, our cakes are not decorated in buttercream and we don’t yet have an edible image printer. We had a fleeting thought about that with this cake to make the money: a Gucci duffel bag with a Gucci belt and money coming out of the bag and money on the cake board. We want all of the cool decorating tools eventually.

Gucci Duffel Moneybag Birthday Cake

A lot of people at Benihana’s where it was delivered were quite impressed with the cake. I think part of it was that it’s hard not to look twice when you see money crumpled up and just hanging out, waiting for someone to just snatch it up. I was thinking about trying to paint the images of the bills, but I’m not really trying to get in the counterfeit market. I’d do some serious traveling with wads of extra cash, but I’m expecting to earn it.

So Amy found some chocolate bills at the local Cost Plus. After taking the chocolate out and crumpling the metal bills, they were just the right scale for the bag and crumpled up just like extra cash. Since we were working without breaks, it was a nice treat to have the chocolate, too.

I should thank the wonderful staff at Benihana’s for helping me find the client (ooops! just a little late in arriving for her cake). I know the hostesses and waiters were hoping I could just give them the cake if the client didn’t arrive, but then the birthday boy wouldn’t have a cake.

Happy Birthday Russell! It’s all yours!

Chocolate Wars

Monday, May 10th, 2010

There’s a cool new show premiering on TLC tonight called “Chocolate Wars”. As one of the perks of being part of TLC’s Cake Crew, I’m catching a sneak preview of the show just after a little chocolate adventure.

Great Blue Heron

Strike a pose.

Amy and I had an unexpected day with nothing to do yesterday when my mom was too sick to spend time with the family on Mother’s Day. We decided to visit Coyote Point Museum in San Mateo to see my favorite bird, the Great Blue Heron, up close. Then since we were so close to where Amy took a private tour of the Guittard factory across the street from the See’s factory, we had to drive by there. You know you’re in the right place when all you can smell in the air around you is chocolate.

Stop and Smell the Chocolate

When you're at the corner of Rollins and Guittard, stop and smell the chocolate.

Guittard Chocolate

Chocolate!!!

Of course, smelling that we had to go up to the Ghirardelli Factory for a chocolate fix. We tried a new sundae called the Espresso Escape with espresso chip ice cream, dark chocolate hot fudge sauce, and fresh whipped cream. With a view of flowing chocolate and a delicious sundae, the sweet smell of chocolate in the air, we were getting a serious chocolate fix.

Ghirardelli Chocolate

Chocolate Rollers

It looks like one is dark and one is milk chocolate, but that's all from the same batch.

Flowing Chocolate

Rich, luscious chocolate

Now watching Chocolate Wars, I can imagine just how good that room smells with the large chocolate showpieces going up. I love watching all of the sweet competitions with pastry chefs making giant cakes, sugar sculptures, and chocolate showpieces. It’s just amazing to see this competition where chocolate is molded into realistic animals and delicate flowers in beautiful colors. And there’s a waterfall in one of the showpieces? You’ve gotta check it out tonight on TLC after another cool show, Best Food Ever – Most Bodacious Bakeries episode. Grab your chocolate pastries for both shows since they’re on at dessert time.

Lamborghini Gallardo 13th Birthday Cake

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

Lamborghini Gallardo 13th Birthday Cake

Martha Stewart had an episode a couple weeks ago where layers of cake in the colors of the rainbow were hiding beneath vanilla icing. That sounds perfect for the upcoming gay pride month. I wonder if more people will jump on this colorful trend.

Lamborghini Gallardo 13th Birthday Cake - Cake Layers

Under the lime green fondant cover of this Lamborghini Gallardo were layers of lime green, orange, and yellow vanilla cake. It was filled with a seedless raspberry jam and iced in vanilla bean buttercream. When we checked the Lamborghini website, we saw those colors on the hot cars. Looks like our client did her research. And watches Martha.

Happy Birthday Parker! (We’re crossing our fingers that you’ll get a Lamborghini in a few years!)
