Santa Clara Fire Department Helmet Cake – Driver Engineer

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

The first time we made a fire engine cake, I had the pleasure of visiting the local downtown San Jose Fire Department. Sergio gave me a tour, showing off the different trucks, letting me take a ton of pictures, and even posing for his own photo shoot. Well, OK, he was really too cool to let me take too many of him, but I know a few friends of mine that would love to imagine spending an afternoon with a fireman. Let them think that slipping on my shoes for a moment, they’d have a great view and could just stay there dreaming.

Santa Clara Fire Department Helmet Cake - Driver Engineer

Michelle is the proud daughter of a retired Driver Engineer for the Santa Clara Fire Department. She was so excited to honor her father with this homage to the many years he served wearing this helmet. That’s right, he was one of those men in uniform fighting the good fight. Please try to contain your excitement, ladies. He’s also someone’s daddy. Or does that even melt your heart, too? Hmmm…

UFC Fighting Ring 45th Birthday Cake

UFC Octagon Fighting Ring Cake

Do you immediately know what someone is talking about when they mention a “rear naked choke hold”? I had no idea until we started researching UFC fighting and moves this week.

This might seem like a cake for a violent person, but it’s really all about the love: friends’ businesses represented on the mat and inner posts, a favorite fighter in a classic hold, and a message from a sweetheart: “Happy 45th birthday Boo, you’re still a knockout!” Now can you feel the love?

Happy Birthday Mike!

Cars Movie Lightning McQueen 2nd Birthday Cake – Ka Chow!

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

I loved the Cars movie when it came out when I was 34, but I’m starting to think it was meant for a really young audience. This Lightning McQueen cake was made for Malik celebrating a 2nd birthday. I recommend this awesome movie to everyone at any age, even though most of the superfans I’ve known have been toddlers. Happy Birthday Malik!

Nike Air Jordan XIV Shoe 23rd Birthday Cake

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

Amy and I watched Chicago Bull’s basketball player #23, Michael Jordan, in awe when he brought the team to the championships for so many years in the 1990s. #23 was incredible. What better way to celebrate a 23rd birthday than with a Nike Air Jordan shoe? Sergio’s birthday was celebrated in style with a party at Playa Azul in Willow Glen. Thinking back to Michael Jordan, #23 is a great one to celebrate.

Happy Birthday Sergio!

Martini Question Mark Birthday Cake

Martini Question Mark Birthday Cake Close-Up

My great grandma was not happy that since there was a hill between our houses that she was sometimes referred to as “grandma over the hill”. As a kid I just didn’t understand how each year my birthday was celebrated with a new numbered candle, but it was not polite for me to ask my grandma’s age.

Now I get it. Our cake artist, Amy, is about to hit a landmark year, and she wants to celebrate to lessen the sting of the big 4-Oh. That comes in March but I’m already thinking about what to do.

I love what Jennifer imagined for Lisa’s birthday. Last year Jennifer came up with the idea for a car from the 1950s to celebrate a 60th birthday. For Lisa’s birthday she wanted a pink and black cake with martini glasses, a question mark topper, and this great message, “30 again? Happy Birthday Lisa!”

Martini Question Mark Birthday Cake

Especially when you can’t say the number, you friends will let you know that THEY know. That’s what friends are for, right? Happy Birthday Lisa!

South Park Hell on Earth 2006 Acura Cake

Sunday, December 13th, 2009

Whenever possible, when we make a cake based on a TV show or movie, we watch it to get a feel for the character or thing that we’re going to make. This cake if based on South Park’s episode “Hell on Earth 2006.” We knew the episode, but it’s just good research to sit back and laugh and remember it again. It’s a tough research job, but somebody has to do it. :)

In the episode, Satan is the star planning his special Halloween party like the girls from MTV’s “My Super Sweet 16″. Everything must be perfect, extravagant, and exactly like the most incredible party of his dreams. Only the special people are invited, dressed the way Satan wants, excited for the great reveal at midnight–a life-size Ferrari cake. Except the Ferrari was ruined, and Satan’s minions were only able to get a last minute life-size Acura cake. Satan is dressed up like Britney Spears as he whines about not getting everything he wanted for his party, screaming “It’s all about me!!!”

C'mon Helen

The crowd is disgusted by Satan’s tantrum, one guest saying “C’mon Helen, I’m suddenly not so hungry for Acura cake.” It’s then that Satan realizes he’s acting like the spoiled girls from “My Super Sweet 16″, apologizes and opens the doors to everyone because the party is only great with everyone there having fun with him.

It's All About Me!

It's All About Me!

Erin knows her husband, Adrain, so well. She knew he would love the dreaded Acura cake that looks like a cake piped in icing, against a backdrop of Satan’s Halloween party. Adrian’s face is beaming on the body of Satan, and Butters is dancing like a crazy boy. I just loved the excitement of Erin when we handed her husband’s birthday surprise cake to her. She sent us a wonderful email to let us know that Adrian loved it, too:

“My husband was so surprised! He loved the cake! The first thing he did was send pictures to all his friends and family, and they all loved it too! He didn’t want to cut or eat it because he said it was way too cool! He did finally cut it last night when a few members of his family came over to wish him a happy birthday, and he said it was delicious! He was also really psyched to see his cake on your website! He wanted me to tell you thank you so much, and that you are masters of your craft! Thank you for helping me make his birthday so special, I can’t tell you how much that means to me!”

Just seeing Erin’s excitement when she saw the cake was great. It means so much to hear that the birthday boy had a great birthday with the cake, too. Happy Birthday Adrian!

Dolce & Gabbana Leopard Print Purse Cake

Dolce & Gabbana Miss Biz Purse Cake

Dolce & Gabbana Miss Biz Purse Cake

Our first leopard print cake was the Webkinz Leopard Print Cake. The leopard print took a lot of time to make out of fondant. It’s a great textural look for a cake with sculpted animals. For this cake we knew we needed to paint the design to make the closest exact match of the design of the Dolce & Gabbana Miss Biz purse.

Until recently I haven’t been confident in my painting skills. We all grow up playing arts and crafts, but I had given up painting at an early age, disappointed in my lack of skills. In the world of cake, there are so many skills that can be applied to make great designs, and I’ve been trying to work on my painting again.

I found the best picture that I could of the purse, mixed colors to match the purse, and went to work painting. It’s so satisfying to focus and just do it and actually see that I’m able to duplicate a design. I’m always going to be my worst critic and I know where I want just a touch more paint, but overall I was very happy with this cake.

And I loved hearing from Ruby that’s she’s looking forward to being 40 and fabulous. I can just imagine her shaking that leopard print with a confident attitude. Happy 40th Ruby!

Pinky Goes to Hollywood Cake

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

This special birthday cake was for a lady that’s always pretty in pink and making her way to the stars. We’re hoping to hear more about Pinky, with her name glittering in the Hollywood lights and walking down her own pink carpet one of these days. “Welcome to Hollywood Pinky.”

Halloween Cakes

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

Here at AJ’s Moonlight Bakery, Amy and I absolutely love Halloween. It’s the colder weather with long nights and decorated houses at the start of months of holidays that make this season great. So you know we were excited to make quite a few Halloween cakes.

For my niece, we made a tiered cake inspired by beautiful invitations. I was thrilled to walk into her Halloween-themed birthday party with a pumpkin cake dressed up for the party. I can’t imagine a better party for a 2-year-old than one with Halloween games where everyone wears costumes.

The design for Hayden’s 1st birthday cake came from a few different cakes that his mom liked. It’s always cool when we can get an idea of what a client likes and then are free to run with the ideas to create the cake.

Owen turned 5 with a Jack Skellington cake and what looked like a great Halloween birthday party. We built up the top of the cake to give the face dimension.

Our last cake went to a Halloween party where the outside of the house had a ton of decorations including glowing ghosts and tombstones. We made this Monsters Cemetery cake inspired by their decor.

Like the holiday, this cake was even better in the dark when you could see the glowing ghosts and the fire glowing under the witch’s cauldron.

Buddy Dog and Butterfly Birthday Cake

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

On a warm Saturday evening, I brought the Buddy Dog and Butterfly cake to dinner at The Counter in Santana Row. My family finally had an evening all together just after my Mom and nephew’s birthday. My nephew wanted his dog in cake and my mom loves butterflies, so we had Buddy looking at the butterfly to bring the two pieces together.

After a long day of making cakes, it was great to relax at The Counter with the family. We had the fries and onion rings as a starter, and then big, delicious custom order burgers. I usually wouldn’t eat such a large burger, but I savored every last bite.

My nephew had fun playing with his dog when we were waiting for our meal. Who says you can’t play with your food?
