Halloween Cakes

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

Here at AJ’s Moonlight Bakery, Amy and I absolutely love Halloween. It’s the colder weather with long nights and decorated houses at the start of months of holidays that make this season great. So you know we were excited to make quite a few Halloween cakes.

For my niece, we made a tiered cake inspired by beautiful invitations. I was thrilled to walk into her Halloween-themed birthday party with a pumpkin cake dressed up for the party. I can’t imagine a better party for a 2-year-old than one with Halloween games where everyone wears costumes.

The design for Hayden’s 1st birthday cake came from a few different cakes that his mom liked. It’s always cool when we can get an idea of what a client likes and then are free to run with the ideas to create the cake.

Owen turned 5 with a Jack Skellington cake and what looked like a great Halloween birthday party. We built up the top of the cake to give the face dimension.

Our last cake went to a Halloween party where the outside of the house had a ton of decorations including glowing ghosts and tombstones. We made this Monsters Cemetery cake inspired by their decor.

Like the holiday, this cake was even better in the dark when you could see the glowing ghosts and the fire glowing under the witch’s cauldron.

St. Patrick’s Day Cake

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

This weather lately has produced some incredible rainbows. Amy and I were driving the curving overpass on Charcot Avenue to Guadalupe Parkway, and just while we were in the air, a huge rainbow appeared. The rainbow was almost right on top of us, seeming to move with us on the curve. Then just as suddenly as it appeared, and right when I was wondering about that pot of gold and what I would do with it, it was gone.

The cake version has a brilliant rainbow with a belted hat, shamrock, and a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Of course that’s chocolate coins. They shine as bright as gold!

What would you do with a pot of gold?

Baby Blue Outfit Cake

Baby Blue Outfit Birthday Cake

Aoife gets creative when she talks to us about cake designs, knowing we make truely personal cakes. I always look around me and imagine cakes designed like patterns and objects that I see. It’s cool that Aoife knows we’ll create whatever she wants in cake.

We first saw Aoife’s youngest son Darragh when we made a Baptismal Font for his Christening last year. This year we had the pleasure of creating a sweet little boy’s outfit for Darragh on his first birthday.

The cake design was inspired by a birthday invitation with the little outfit. Details are made out of fondant and painted to show the subtle shadows you would expect to see if Darragh were wearing the little shirt and shorts with suspenders and buttons.

The only thing cuter than a little boy’s outfit is the little boy in it. Happy Birthday Darragh!

Tiffany Box Cake

Monday, December 29th, 2008

My sister has been asking for a cake for a long time, and I’ve denied every request. Finally she arrived from Denver just in time for Christmas. She has been showing off our cakes to her friends in Denver, so of course she got her own cake just for coming to town. (We deliver all of our cakes. They’re too delicate to ship.)

Tiffany Box Celebration Cake

My sister is the lady that knows all about the best in fashion and style. With her great taste, I knew she’d love the simply elegant Tiffany box. I miss the reactions of many people to their cakes, so it was fun to see Christine get excited about her cake. And who can resist this smile?

Support Bra Cake

Support Bra Birthday Cake

I know a few people that have just reached those milestone birthdays, and for many, it seems to hit them like a ton of bricks. So when I saw the design for this cake, I knew this was going to be one interesting 50th birthday party.

Lori’s husband provided a picture of this cake, deciding this would be a great way to take his wife over the threshold of turning 50. “Lori is 50. Let’s give her some Support.” With a support bra, pink roses, and baubles and beads, I hope this made her smile and laugh as much as her husband and friends did.

Cheers to many more wonderful years!

Sponge Bob Square Pants Birthday Cake

Sunday, November 9th, 2008

Sponge Bob would have quite the ego if he showed up at Jonathan and Anthony’s birthday party. Sponge Bob’s image was everywhere–the tablecloths, balloons, a gigantic bouncer, and even little Anthony’s crocs. Then we showed up with the Sponge Bob Square Pants cake that the family wouldn’t stop staring at, as if that was the only Sponge Bob that showed up to this party.

Thanks go the Gerrie and Amy for printing a picture of Sponge Bob for us when our computer went down for a day. Even their little girl, Rylie, helped by drawing a picture for us. Thanks Rylie!

Now we can stop saying “I’m a goofy goober, yeah!” Yes, we’ve seen many Sponge Bob cartoon episodes AND the movie.

Jonthan and Anthony’s mom sent a great letter the next day:

Hi Amy,

I just wanted to thank u again for taking the time to make jonathan’s and anthony’s cake. U did such a marvelous job! I was very impress. I really like the cake… it was yummo. Couple of people asked for some to go as well… which is rare. Jonathan was showing off his spongebob cake… he loved the way it came out.

Thanks again… u are a doll!!!

Vote Roger Study for President

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

Today is a great day for many Americans to get involved in the political process to decide who will become our next President. Earlier today a proud mama celebrated a great day for her son that happens on this day every year.

We delivered this patriotic cake to Roger’s party at a great bowling alley in Cupertino called Strike Cupertino. If you haven’t seen what a cool hangout this party site could be, you’re missing out.

Roger’s mom asked for this Vote Roger Study for President Cake as a great tribute to her son on his birthday. Maybe this is the just the first time that we’ll hear his name in such great honor.

No on Prop 8 Cake

Friday, October 31st, 2008

I’m so proud of all of my friends who are standing up for my rights and the rights of all of the other gays and lesbians in this state. They are showing a wonderful spirit in the fight for equal rights.

The history of marriage has included some dark times when interracial marriages were not allowed, and no one now can imagine such discrimination. We need to keep discrimination out of the California Constitution. It’s unfair and it’s wrong.

Native American Drum Cake

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

With a passion for Native American artifacts, Ruben’s wife had to get this Native American Drum cake for his birthday. That’s one way to have your cake and eat it, too.
