Colts Football Logo Birthday Cake

I was surprised when Amy said she wanted to make a cake for her sister, Emily while we were on vacation, but at the same time I wasn’t. It’s been a few years since we’ve traveled back to Indiana to see Amy’s family. Her parents came out to see us last year when it was her dad’s birthday. We surprised Momma and Poppa Bone with cakes when we showed off the bakery. Our vacation this year was during Amy’s birthday and right before Emily’s birthday, so I was glad Amy wanted to make a cake for her sister.

Of course that meant packing everything to make the cake. Cake pans, cake boards, a big rolling pin, fondant tools, fondant, and Mexican chocolate were in the suitcase. I wasn’t surprised to see the note that said the checked suitcase was inspected. Fondant looks like a weapon, right? Or maybe it was the rolling pin.

So a couple days into relaxing in Indiana, we made a couple Mexican chocolate round cakes and Mexican chocolate buttercream, draped it in fondant, made baubles to border the cake, and put the Colts horseshoe logo on top. Emily is a huge Colts fan. She came over to dinner with her kids who were both wearing Colts jerseys to our surprise. We couldn’t have planned that better. Look at this beautiful family.

Emily, I wish we could still be there for your birthday. We were sooo happy to celebrate a little early with you. Happy Birthday!

Sex in the City 30th Birthday Cake with Manolo Blahnik Heel

I love the message on this cake: “Marci is 30 and Sexy in the City”. We brought this blingy Sex in the City cake with rhinestones and a Manolo Blahnik heel to downtown San Jose’s Fahrenheit Restaurant & Lounge.

Roulette Wheel and Roulette Table 50th Anniversary Cake

Roulette Wheel and Roulette Table 50th Anniversary Cake

Have you been to a casino party? I went to one a few years ago for a holiday office party. The office’s top gamblers worked the tables, teaching the newbies how to play. It’s funny that I learned more about how to play roulette by making this table than playing that night. Maybe it was a few too many Cape Cods.

What kind of cake do you get for a casino theme celebration? This roulette table will put anyone in the mood to play. And the Fairbrae Swim and Racquet Club must knows how to throw a party and celebrate 50 years.

I’m still amazed at the roulette wheel that Amy made with the cool wood grain. It looks good enough to play. And the winner is red 21. :)

Gyruss Arcade Game 40th Birthday Cake

Gyruss Video Arcade Game 40th Birthday Cake

I have so many fond memories of going to arcades in the ’80s playing the cool games as they came out. And what’s Rich’s favorite? Gyruss! I brought the Gyruss cake to Rich’s party and heard the guys also remembering their love of the arcades, debating the significance of Gyruss and other breakthrough video games. Was that the first one to come out with stereo sound? I could say that even contemplating things like new stereo sound makes me feel old (I hear that from so many of my friends) but I’d rather say we’ve come a long way, baby.

Kids today are playing Zombie Farm on their iPads, but if you want to make a new 40-years-old feel young again, you’ve gotta break out the old school arcade games. We’re as young as we feel, right?

Happy Birthday, Rich!

Stylin' Hello Kitty 26th Birthday Cake

What do you get for your favorite stylist that loves Hello Kitty? Here’s our Stylin’ Hello Kitty Birthday Cake. Guillermo dropped off a couple big gift boxes to the bakery before his girlfriend’s birthday and asked us to deliver them along with the cake to W’s Salon in Santana Row where Erica works.

Delivering a surprise cake to a stylist, of course Erica was in the middle of cutting a client’s hair. Luckily her client seemed happy to be part of the excitement, and the rest of the ladies gathered around in wonder at her special personalized cake and the thoughtfulness of Erica’s boyfriend.

Tiffany Box Birthday Cake with Holly Golightly Letter

Tiffany Box Birthday Cake Holly Golightly Letter

I can’t believe all the rain we’ve been getting at the end of May here in sunny California. Of course I was wary of the dark clouds threatening to storm on this Tiffany box cake that was delivered to Ann’s Coffee Shop in Menlo Park. I was hoping the rainbow over the hills behind Menlo Park was a good sign because I like rainbows. But knowing they’re only created by light AND water, why was I so hopeful?

Well, I delivered to this coffee shop that looked to be from 50 years ago with the large counter in the middle of the shop taking over most of the space. A few locals appeared to be enjoying their quiet morning of big plates and newspapers. Little did they know I was bringing the cake for a small crowd to celebrate a birthday breakfast.

The Tiffany box came with a special message, “Thank you for joining me for breakfast. Happy Birthday, Linda. Love, Holly Golightly.” I have a feeling the ladies coming to celebrate Linda’s birthday were going to liven up the place and disturb the men’s peace talking about Breakfast at Tiffany’s. I mean, who doesn’t get excited when they see a Tiffany box?! Happy Birthday Linda!

If you could get a letter from a movie character, who would you choose?

Sakamoto Slug Run 2010 Fundraiser Cake

There was a great turnout at the Sakamoto Elementary Slug Run fundraiser last Saturday. I was surprised at just how many kids and parents were there. With the purpose of sending all of their 6th graders to Science camp, it was a cause we were happy to be a part of. I mean, I wish I could have gone to Science camp when I was younger. What a great opportunity for the kids!

Halloween Cakes

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

Here at AJ’s Moonlight Bakery, Amy and I absolutely love Halloween. It’s the colder weather with long nights and decorated houses at the start of months of holidays that make this season great. So you know we were excited to make quite a few Halloween cakes.

For my niece, we made a tiered cake inspired by beautiful invitations. I was thrilled to walk into her Halloween-themed birthday party with a pumpkin cake dressed up for the party. I can’t imagine a better party for a 2-year-old than one with Halloween games where everyone wears costumes.

The design for Hayden’s 1st birthday cake came from a few different cakes that his mom liked. It’s always cool when we can get an idea of what a client likes and then are free to run with the ideas to create the cake.

Owen turned 5 with a Jack Skellington cake and what looked like a great Halloween birthday party. We built up the top of the cake to give the face dimension.

Our last cake went to a Halloween party where the outside of the house had a ton of decorations including glowing ghosts and tombstones. We made this Monsters Cemetery cake inspired by their decor.

Like the holiday, this cake was even better in the dark when you could see the glowing ghosts and the fire glowing under the witch’s cauldron.

St. Patrick’s Day Cake

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

This weather lately has produced some incredible rainbows. Amy and I were driving the curving overpass on Charcot Avenue to Guadalupe Parkway, and just while we were in the air, a huge rainbow appeared. The rainbow was almost right on top of us, seeming to move with us on the curve. Then just as suddenly as it appeared, and right when I was wondering about that pot of gold and what I would do with it, it was gone.

St. Patrick’s Day Sharmock, Hat and Pot o’ Gold Cakes

The cake version has a brilliant rainbow with a belted hat, shamrock, and a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Of course that’s chocolate coins. They shine as bright as gold!

What would you do with a pot of gold?

Baby Blue Outfit Cake

Baby Blue Outfit Birthday Cake

Aoife gets creative when she talks to us about cake designs, knowing we make truely personal cakes. I always look around me and imagine cakes designed like patterns and objects that I see. It’s cool that Aoife knows we’ll create whatever she wants in cake.

We first saw Aoife’s youngest son Darragh when we made a Baptismal Font for his Christening last year. This year we had the pleasure of creating a sweet little boy’s outfit for Darragh on his first birthday.

The cake design was inspired by a birthday invitation with the little outfit. Details are made out of fondant and painted to show the subtle shadows you would expect to see if Darragh were wearing the little shirt and shorts with suspenders and buttons.

The only thing cuter than a little boy’s outfit is the little boy in it. Happy Birthday Darragh!
