Martini Question Mark Birthday Cake

Martini Question Mark Birthday Cake Close-Up

My great grandma was not happy that since there was a hill between our houses that she was sometimes referred to as “grandma over the hill”. As a kid I just didn’t understand how each year my birthday was celebrated with a new numbered candle, but it was not polite for me to ask my grandma’s age.

Now I get it. Our cake artist, Amy, is about to hit a landmark year, and she wants to celebrate to lessen the sting of the big 4-Oh. That comes in March but I’m already thinking about what to do.

I love what Jennifer imagined for Lisa’s birthday. Last year Jennifer came up with the idea for a car from the 1950s to celebrate a 60th birthday. For Lisa’s birthday she wanted a pink and black cake with martini glasses, a question mark topper, and this great message, “30 again? Happy Birthday Lisa!”

Especially when you can’t say the number, you friends will let you know that THEY know. That’s what friends are for, right? Happy Birthday Lisa!

First Unitarian Church Ordination Cake

First Unitarian Church Ordination Cake - Suzanne Marsh

First Unitarian Church Ordination Cake - Suzanne Marsh

The team that organized the ordination for Jennifer Debusk at the First Unitarian Church here in downtown San Jose were amazed by the first cake we made for them. This time we made enough cake for the whole large crowd that came to celebrate the ordination of Suzanne Marsh. This cake has rainbow baubles, the symbols of the church in the gold discs, a chalice topper, and the stole that the ordained ministers wear. We delivered the cake to the church and met Suzanne’s proud son. It’s a joy to be part of a momentous occasion.

Pinky Goes to Hollywood Cake

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

This special birthday cake was for a lady that’s always pretty in pink and making her way to the stars. We’re hoping to hear more about Pinky, with her name glittering in the Hollywood lights and walking down her own pink carpet one of these days. “Welcome to Hollywood Pinky.”

Halloween Cakes

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

Here at AJ’s Moonlight Bakery, Amy and I absolutely love Halloween. It’s the colder weather with long nights and decorated houses at the start of months of holidays that make this season great. So you know we were excited to make quite a few Halloween cakes.

For my niece, we made a tiered cake inspired by beautiful invitations. I was thrilled to walk into her Halloween-themed birthday party with a pumpkin cake dressed up for the party. I can’t imagine a better party for a 2-year-old than one with Halloween games where everyone wears costumes.

The design for Hayden’s 1st birthday cake came from a few different cakes that his mom liked. It’s always cool when we can get an idea of what a client likes and then are free to run with the ideas to create the cake.

Owen turned 5 with a Jack Skellington cake and what looked like a great Halloween birthday party. We built up the top of the cake to give the face dimension.

Our last cake went to a Halloween party where the outside of the house had a ton of decorations including glowing ghosts and tombstones. We made this Monsters Cemetery cake inspired by their decor.

Like the holiday, this cake was even better in the dark when you could see the glowing ghosts and the fire glowing under the witch’s cauldron.

Red Zebra Sweet 16 Cake

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

What’s black and white and red all over? Check out our Red Zebra Sweet 16 cake.

Red Zebra Sweet 16 Birthday Cake

We arrived at the Fremont Community Center with the Red Zebra Sweet 16 cake to find red tablecloths with zebra print table runners on all of the tables. That’s when we know our cake found it’s home. Zebra’s are all about the camelflage, right?

The topsy turvy tiers of Mexican chocolate, white chocolate, and coconut cake were all covered in gianduja buttercream. Zebra stripes, stars, black, red, and white baubles, and a red 16 make this a festive cake for a great birthday party.

Happy Sweet 16 Jade!

Webkinz Leopard Print Cake

Webkinz Leopard Print Birthday Cake

Who would think that THE premier cupcake lady of the Tri Valley would come to us for a cake? Gloria of Dolce’ the Little Bake Shop makes the best cupcakes for weddings, birthdays, and other special events, so we know she could make her own deliciousness for her daughter’s party. But I guess sometimes you just want a cake.

Caycie fell in love with our cakes last year when she had a pink pirate party. All of the girls were pirates for the day, and Caycie had a cake inspired by the Avril Lavigne pink skull and cross bones.

This year it’s all about the Webkinz. Three tiers of vanilla chiffon cake, strawberry filling, and vanilla buttercream are decorated in leopard print and pink and white strips. The Webkinz silverback gorilla, spotted leopard, and bubblegumsauraus hang out around the cake.

The morning after the party we found this picture posted to Gloria’s Facebook page with a message:

1920’s New Year’s Eve Birthday Cake

Thursday, January 1st, 2009

Gisella got the best party of the year. Can you imagine a New Year’s Eve Birthday party? Every hour for 24 hours, people around the world are popping open Champagne bottles, blasting huge fireworks displays, screaming and hollering their excitement for (your birthday on) the new year. With all of the people celebrating, what gal wouldn’t feel special?

1920’s New Year’s Eve Birthday Celebration Cake

For Gisella’s birthday party, her friends threw a 1920’s theme party, Gisella’s favorite era. This classy cake has three offset square tiers in alternating black and white with black and white polka dots, pearlized baubles, a sparkly red 30, and gold and silver stars. Each tier is a different flavor: red velvet cake with cream cheese icing, chocolate cake with gianduja buttercream, and almond cake with almond buttercream.

We couldn’t resist adding rainbow lights to the 30 and around the cake to highlight the decorations. Lights just make us happy around the holidays. Check out how the lights glow in the dark.

1920’s New Year’s Eve Birthday Cake Lights

2008 was a great year of many wonderful clients and great cakes. We’re looking forward to another year of fun decorating extraordinary cakes. We wish you happiness, good health, and success in 2009!

Hawaiian Waterfall Tiered Birthday Cake

Monday, December 8th, 2008

We love finding Ace of Cakes fans. They’re the ones that already know and appreciate what we do before they even see their cake. Marc came by the shop to talk about the design for his wife, Chris’ cake. He and his wife watch the cake decorating reality show together, so he knew that telling us about her love of Hawaii, he could expect us to make a fabulous cake for her.

Hawaiian Waterfall Tiered Birthday Cake Turtle and Flowers

On three tiers of red velvet cake with vanilla cream cheese icing, the Hawaiian scene was made up of a cascading waterfall, palm trees, rocks, flowers, and a swimming turtle. The wish for a happy birthday was translated in Hawaiian by Marc: Hau Oli La Hanau E Chris.

Marc plotted with Chris’ coworkers to plan a surprise party at her work. Marc was so excited when he picked up the cake, ready to surprise Chris with the cake he designed with us, and celebrate with all of her friends at work on her birthday.

Through the Years Custom Birthday Cake

AJ’s wife celebrated her 40th birthday with a cake that’s all about her. AJ (yes, we love the name) called us with the request to bring his wife, Jennie, back through the decades of her lifetime so far. The years were showcased on three cake tiers made of almond cake and almond buttercream, lemon poppyseed cake and lemon buttercream, and chocolate cake and chocolate buttercream.

Through the Years Custom Birthday Cake 2

From hospital and baby carriage to Prince and leggings to Mustang, to home and family and fireworks, Jennie has had quite a life already. The message from her husband reads, “It’s only going to get better.”

Through the Years Custom Birthday Cake Message

Delivering the cake, we were there to see our birthday gal and her family surrounding the cake. They excitedly pointed out their dalmation, the “Taco Bell”, the earthquake cake, the camping trailer, and other pieces of Jennie’s life that they saw on the cake. Personalized by her husband, they were all enjoying the cake trip down memory lane.

Through the Years Custom Birthday Cakes 3

AJ was so sweet to his wife to give her a personal birthday cake. Then he sent this wonderful letter to us.
********************************************************

Amy,
Thank you for a fantastic cake. You took all my ideas and fit them in to the cake beautifully. It told my wifes life story from the bottom to the top. My wife was so surprised when you brought the cake in. I thought she was going to cry as she tried to take in all the different aspects of the cake. It was a hit all night , all our family and friends loved the cake and had a great time trying to figure out the story and all the different figures. My daughters kept the dalmatian and the mustang, they are sitting in our fridge. Everyone loved the 21st birthday earthquake cake, the family loved the flags, and the colors were beautiful. We sang ‘happy birthday’ my wife blew out the candles and it took 20 minutes before she talked herself into cutting such a beautiful cake. Then we got to eat the cake, I love chocolate but the lemon poppy seed was great. Luckily for me that was the largest tier and the only tier with some left over. I’m still eating a sliver a night to this day.

Thank you again for all your hard work, it was greatly appreciated.

AJ

We’re glad everyone enjoyed the cake, AJ. (We have the best clients!)
